The Cowboys have been trade-happy the past year in rebuilding their defense. They traded Micah Parsons to the Packers in return for Kenny Clark and other compensation; they traded with the Jets for Quinnen Williams; and they traded with the Packers for Rashan Gary.
They are trying to do even more before the start of the season.
During his training camp kickoff news conference, owner Jerry Jones teased a trade discussion he had with another team’s owner earlier this week.
Executive vice president Stephen Jones continued the trade talk on Friday during an appearance on 105.3 The Fan.
“We’ve got several things that we’re considering right now. Some of it trades; some of it signing guys,” Stephen Jones said on the radio, via Tommy Yarrish of the team website. “A lot of these older players who have still got some tread on the tires can come in here and help you. It may come in the form of a trade; it may come in the form of a veteran signing as you move into camp.”
The Cowboys still need help at pass rusher and at inside linebacker. Veteran linebacker Bobby Wagner remains a free agent, but former Cowboys scout Bryan Broaddus, who is now on 105.3, told listeners to “keep an eye on Jordyn Brooks.”
Dallas had interest in a trade for Brooks this offseason, but the Dolphins wanted too much in return. Miami since has signed Brooks to a three-year, $51.3 million deal.
The Cowboys also tried to trade for Raiders edge rusher Maxx Crosby this offseason. Jerry Jones said earlier this week that his team never stopped pursuing Crosby even after Baltimore reneged on its deal with the Raiders for Crosby.
The Cowboys certainly seem intent on getting even more help on defense before the start of the season.
Stephen Jones said Friday that the team is “far from done” acquiring players.
“I’d be surprised if the starting players on this defense don’t change over time,” Jones said. “We’re always looking to be better. We’ll continue to monitor this.”
