As most Americans who are interested in the World Cup await Monday night’s game between the U.S. team and Belgium in Seattle, an equally intriguing match happens tonight in Mexico City.
It’s England vs. Mexico, starting at 8:00 p.m. ET.
FIFA had considered moving the Round of 16 contest up by six hours, due to the threat of thunderstorms. Tuesday night’s win over Ecuador in the Round of 32 was delayed by a full hour before kickoff due to lightning in the area.
Regardless of when it starts, the game has plenty of drama: before, during, and after.
England arrived Friday to acclimate to the extreme altitude. They had hoped to keep quiet the location of their hotel. And while they had no issues on Friday night, social media has plenty of videos of Saturday night’s efforts by Mexican fans to disrupt the sleep of the English with music and fireworks — like they did the night before the Ecuador game.
If Mexico wins to clinch a spot in the quarterfinal round, steps have already been taken to avoid a repeat of Tuesday night’s serious issues following the victory over Ecuador. Four people died in the intense and overcrowded celebration at the Angel of Independence monument.
Only 25,000 will be allowed in the area on Sunday night, with an increased security presence and other efforts aimed at controlling the chaos.
The appetizer arrives at 4:00 p.m. ET, with Brazil and Norway meeting at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. You should watch both, but you definitely shouldn’t miss England at Mexico at 8:00 p.m. ET tonight.
