Brian Belichick takes over Steve Belichick’s role calling defense for Bill Belichick’s team

With one of Bill Belichick’s sons resigning as his defensive coordinator, Belichick’s other son will take on the role.

Brian Belichick is expected to take over North Carolina’s defensive play calling, according to Matt Zenitz of CBS. Brian Belichick is the Tar Heels’ secondary coach, and it is not clear whether he will be getting a promotion in title to defensive coordinator, or only taking on the job responsibilities.

Steve Belichick resigned as defensive coordinator today, amid turmoil in Bill Belichick’s football program that included a report that witnesses were being questioned regarding whether Steve Belichick “used drugs on the job or provided drugs to at least one player.”

Brian Belichick called the defensive plays for the first two games of the season, while Steve Belichick was on medical leave. Brian Belichick’s entire coaching tenure has been either in New England or North Carolina: Brian worked for the Patriots from 2016 to 2024. He worked in New England for the last eight years of Bill Belichick’s tenure there, and then kept his job as safeties coach under Jerod Mayo for one year before Mike Vrabel decided not to keep any Belichicks on the staff. Brian then joined North Carolina’s staff when his father got the head-coaching job.
