Judge grants TRO against SEC, Greg Sankey over fifth-year issue

To no surprise whatsoever, the SEC’s effort to ignore an injunction granting players from the high-school class of 2022 a fifth year of eligibility has fallen flat.

Via multiple reports, a judge in Dallas, Texas, has issued a temporary restraining order against the NCAA, the SEC, and Commissioner Greg Sankey over the conference’s effort to ignore a prior injunction giving players who have spent time under contract with NFL teams another year of college eligibility.

It’s the sensible result. If the players are entitled to another year, the conferences shouldn’t be allowed to do what the NCAA can’t.

The SEC won’t mind taking the L; the effort to create an unenforceable prohibition on welcoming players with another year of eligibility seems to be all about generating political momentum toward getting the Protect College Sports Act passed.

That’s the obvious play, especially with the Senate returning from its summer recess soon. Stoke enough outrage to get the bill turned into law, securing an antitrust exemption for the schools — and picking the pockets of the players.
